STING-2023: Postgraduate quiz on toxinology and snakebite mitigation

The CMC Poison Control Centre conducted “STING-2023” the second annual postgraduate quiz on toxinology and snakebite mitigation on the 16th of September 2023 as part of the International Snakebite Awareness Day. Since its inception, the quiz has sought to create awareness and increase interest amongst postgraduate residents in the neglected field of clinical Toxinology.

The quiz saw the participation of 17 teams from a range of medical specialities. Following the preliminary round, 5 teams qualified for the final round.

The quiz covered a range of topics with questions from the history of toxinology, landmark publications in toxinology, plant and mushroom poisoning, applied aspects of toxinology, snake biology, snakebite envenoming and snakebite mitigation.

Mr. Mugilan, wildlife conservationist was the chief guest. Dr. Amith Balachandran, was the quiz master, whose questions kept the teams and the audience rivetted to the end. Not only did the quiz cover the breadth of Clinical Toxicology, it also tested the depth of the participants’ knowledge in the field.

The quiz was keenly contested, with the buzzer and negative marking ensuring a nail-biting finish. The first prize was awarded to Drs. Ajeeth Kumar M and Sittheswaren M (Government Chengalpattu Medical College), the second prize to Drs. Aadil Abdul Kareem and Srikanth E R (CMC Vellore) and the third prize to Drs. Namrata Mathew and John Roy Palathinkal (CMC Vellore).
